PROTECT YOUR
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
While Catalytic Converter Thefts Skyrocket
How it works
Why are catalytic converter thefts on the rise country wide?
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), 14,433 converters were reported stolen nationwide in 2020, up from just 3,389 in 2019 and 1,298 in 2018. And this year is much worse. The insurance website way.com says as of Nov. 5, thefts are up 400% from 2020.
COST TO REPLACE A CATALYTIC CONVERTER
For most vehicles, the average cost of a catalytic converter repair is between $945 and $2475 including parts and labor.
The catalytic converter cost itself can be up to $2250 of that. This does not include the damage caused by these thefts can be extensive and may cost as much as $3,000, or more, to repair.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR THE THIEVES?
Thieves can easily remove these expensive parts from cars and then sell them to recyclers for hundreds of dollars depending on the car's make and model. They are being scrapped for the palladium, which is a valuable metal.
IS THE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT COVERED BY YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY?
If you have comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy, then you're typically covered against catalytic converter theft. Comprehensive coverage will typically pay to replace the stolen catalytic converter and repair any related damage from its removal. However, you must first pay your deductible and experience a ding on your record.
